Marking genes are genes that give your horses special markings over their coat. Standard markings (face and leg markings) are also genetically based.

Common Markings

Birdcatcher
Rabicano
BendOr
Frost
Stockings
Blue eyes

Birdcatcher Spots: This gene gives horses white spots and speckles on their coat. It can vary from minimal spotting, to heavy spotting. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse with BB will always display the marking, but a horse with Bb may display or only carry the marking.

Rabicano: This gene causes roaning and flecking around the flank or barrel of the horse. It can be very minimal to fairly extreme. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse with RR will always display the marking, but a horse with Rr may display or only carry the marking.

BendOr Spots: This gene causes dark spots to appear on the horse. They can vary in size and are usually softer looking than the white Birdcatcher markings. This gene is semi-dominant. A horse with BB will always display the marking, but a horse with Bb may display or only carry the marking.

Frosting: Frosting is a marking that adds white streaks or highlights in a horse's mane and tail, often referred to as "frosting". It can be added to a horse by using the Frost In item. Frosting is genetically dominant and may show on Ff and will always show on FF.

Super Stocking: Super Stocking is an extra-high stocking added using the Silly Stocking item. Horses who have this marking have a chance to pass it on and also have a higher chance of passing on more white leg markings in general. (Including normal stockings, half stockings, and tall socks.)

Blue Eyes: Modifies color of the eyes into blue. This can be added to a horse with the Skyscope item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are Moderate or Strong will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking.

Paint Markings

Sabino
Snowball
Overo
Splash
Tobiano
Scrappy Tobiano

Sabino: This is a paint-type gene that causes pinto markings on a horse. Sabino markings are usually lace-like with a softer, speckled appearance. This gene is dominant, but horses with Ss will typically not display as heavy of markings as horses with SS. This gene will override Overo and Tobiano genes! An attached modifier gene adds the snowball marking.

Snowball Sabino: The snowball sabino is a special type of sabino made with the Snowball item. It involves both a gene for sabino and a gene for the snowball effect. A horse who has snowball may pass either snowball or normal sabino depending upon the genes they carry. Snowball horses will never show any other type of paint marking, even if they have two paint layers. The modifier for this gene is M1 on the Sabino gene.

Overo: This is a paint-type gene that causes pinto markings on a horse. Overo markings can take a variety of patterns from frame (body) markings to splash/minimal (legs/face) markings. These are usually rougher edged than Sabino markings. This is dominant, but horses with Oo will not show as many white markings as horses with OO. Sabino will override this marking! Overo will override Tobiano. In addition, FFH does NOT have a lethal white overo trait. An attached modifier gene adds the splashed paint marking.

Splash Overo: Splash overo is a special type of overo made with the Spilled Paint item. It requires both a gene for Overo and a gene for Splash. A horse who has Splash can pass either Splash or normal Overo depending upon the genes they carry. Splash horses can never show any other type of paint marking, even if they have two paint layers. The modifier for this gene is M1 on the Overo gene.

Tobiano: This is a paint-type gene that causes pinto markings on a horse. Tobiano markings tend to have soft, roudned edges. They are heavier across the barrel of the horse and usually cross the back. It is not uncommon for tobiano horses to have solid or minimally marked legs and/or faces. This is dominant, but horses with Tt will not show as many white markings as horses with TT. Both Sabino and Overo will override this marking!

Scrappy Tobiano: Scrappy tobiano is a special type of tobiano made with the Rusty Figurine item. It requires both a gene for Tobiano and a gene for Scrappy. A horse who has Scrappy can pass either Scrappy or normal Tobiano depending upon the genes they carry. Scrappy horses can never show any other type of paint marking, even if they have two layers. The modifier for this gene is M1 on the Tobiano gene.

Rare Markings

Brindle
Streak
Lace
Masque
Badger
Mustache

Brindle: This gene causes white striping (brindling) to appear on the body of the horse. It can vary in intensity from subtle to quite strong. This gene is recessive. ONLY horses with BB will show the marking, though horses with Bb can still pass it to their offspring.

Streak: This gene causes striping to appear on the body of the horse. It is very similar to brindle but in a darker color. It can vary in intensity from subtle to quite strong. This gene is recessive. ONLY horses with SS will show the marking, though horses with Ss can still pass it to their offspring.

Lace: This gene causes white cobwebbing, also known as lace, to appear on the back or body of the horse. It can vary from faint white lacy marks across the dorsal zone to bolder white marks that resemble reverse dappling. This gene is recessive. ONLY horses with LL will show the marking, though horses with Ll can still pass it to their offspring.

Masque: Masque is a special type of face marking that comes in several variations. These markings are obtained using the Courtly Masque item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are Moderate or Strong will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking.

Badger: Badger is a special type of face marking based on the realistic badger face markings. It comes in three variations, all of which include a blue or partially blue eye. These markings are obtained using the Badger Bait item. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are Moderate or Strong will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking.

Mustache: Mustache is a special type of face marking which creates white snips resembling a milk mustache. It can be added to a horse using the Santa's Snack item given out in Christmas presents. Recessive horses will never pass the gene, while horses who are Moderate or Strong will accordingly have a chance of displaying the marking.
